Sunday, August 18, 2024

Wake up to distant sirens and drippy fog this morning.  The last day of car week here in Monterey.  Yep a celebration of old and new cars.  A financial bonanza to highway patrol and the police. Huge volume of tickets and citations, arrests, drunk driving, high speed races in town. Maybe the hospitality industry also benefits from the visitors. Each day the logs of the police and patrol activities are listed on facebook.

My short street is quiet. A distant hum of car noises is in the air. A wood pecker is discovering the old redwood trim on my house. Sounds like someone is hammering nails. Friends who might have stopped by, complain of the terrible traffic jams.

I start reading Dr. Anthony Fauci’s new book ON CALL, a Doctor’s Journey in Public Service. His chapter on the AIDS epidemic brings back intense sad memories of the 80’s and 90’s. For me, a more difficult time then the COVID epidemic. In the beginning everyone who had AIDS died a terrible death.

So, a quiet Saturday at home, a few phone calls, a nap, folding laundry, waiting for the afternoon sun, reading, watching the news. Life will become intense again on Monday when my daughter has her lung surgery.
