I was sitting in the crowded dark office while my tires were
being replaced. A man and his dog came
in and sat near me. I said, I am afraid
of dogs. His dog was on a tight lease
and was agitated pulling at the leash.
He said, my dog doesn’t bite. I
said, they all say that and he gave me the evil eye. I went back to reading the book I had but
kept watch on his restless dog. The dog
did not bite me and the man paid his bill and picked up his keys and left.
The sun heats up my house.
The door and window are open. A
dog is barking in the distance. Crows are squawking. No one is trying to bite me now.
The new dog in the neighborhood barks a lot when the owners
are out. We have been reluctant to tell
them.
