Sitting in my car in the shade across the street from the
lake. Big sky, eucalyptus trees,
cemetery. Hawks drifting high in circles, seagulls darting around the
lake. People running, dogs on leashes,
baby strollers. Cars roaring on the street. And single women with bags and
backpacks moving toward the parking lot, sitting on benches, against trunks of
trees. The white and blue IHelp bus comes and the women stand in line to
enter. No one notices as people run,
walk, drive through the late afternoon.
Outside my bedroom
window my neighbor’s lights are out.
They have gone to bed. I am
pushing myself to stay up until 9. I am
resisting going to bed earlier.
Another load of books from the library. Picked up CAMELBACK Falls by Jon Talton, a
mystery story based in Phoenix.
