In the evening, a friend calls and asks if I have an extra walker. She suddenly can’t walk. Yes of course, she knows I have walkers. I have four of them, different walkers for different purposes. She is in the middle of cancer treatment and developed a severe pain in her leg. My roommate takes the light portable rollator to her. What about a cane I say, Yep, that would be helpful. The cane arrives with the walker.
Over the five years of treatments and illnesses I have collected equipment. Luckily, I have a large basement for storage. After my first crises I wanted to be prepared for whatever comes along. Some equipment bought and some donated. Fear arises frequently about being helpless and in danger.
Several times I have been caught unable to walk and helpless. To assuage my anxiety, I search for solutions before I actually need them. Today I am walking well with a cane. I use a walker as a transport system to move my books, computer, and meal trays around the house.
I have finally started reading the library book, WE THE PEOPLE, a history of the constitution by Jill Lepore. The book is heavy and daunting. The first chapter is so interesting, I will continue. I may have to buy it.
