Today in the medical waiting room I watch the guard by the door, a tall fit man with a shaved head wearing a uniform with badges and stripes. He owns the room, watching everyone and everything, He helps with door openings and confused visitors. He sits in a raised cubicle by the door. People with badges stop and chat with him. At first, I think he as a greeter or a concierge. Nope a security officer keeping the peace in the large room where solitary folks look at their cell phones and wait. No complaints from me.
Three older women sit together in a corner, two on chairs and one in a home made wheel chair. A small dog is passed around. I wish I understood Spanish. I watch the movements of their bodies and the words and the dog. I am relieved the guard doesn’t question the presence of the dog.
We watch Rachel Maddow in the evening. Curtains pulled against the sunlight. The bright tv screen fills the room. Yes, we are reaching a turning point. Today the massive KEEP YOUR HANDS OFF national rallies will give us a chance to use our voices.
I am rereading P.D. James novel AN UNSUITABLE JOB FOR A WOMAN. I read this book 40 years ago. I like revisiting a time without computers or cell phones. Every serious event happens face to face.
