It is not as if I won anything.  Last night I went to sleep in my cold cold house.  A crew of workers and several pieces of big equipment were up the street. This was my fourth night going to bed in the dark and cold. I was living in an alternative universe waiting for the morning light and then dreading the evening dark. I had my flashlight, a battery lantern and a solar light.

I dressed in all my warm clothes, my house never got warmer than 55 degrees during the stormy days. Friends offered me shelter but I didn’t want to abandon my home. I started losing my ability to make decisions and focus on planning. It was too cold to shower, I started to smell.  I ate a hot meal out, I went to the library to charge my phone. This morning I have light and heat.

I read several books sitting in the dark with the flashlight balanced on my body.  The best book was LOST CHILDREN ARCHIVE BY Valeria Luiselli.  The other books help me get to 9pm so I could go to bed.
