The workers continue to hammer and saw and use loud
machinery right outside my bedroom window.
Maybe 30 feet away. I am becoming
acclimated to the sounds. We can’t improve our homes without a bit of
noise. When I make noise I forget others
can hear me.
I email the absent neighbor about his dangerous tree. I make an appointment with the dryer repair
person. I wash dishes. I don’t fold my
clothes or make my bed. Still need to go
to the grocery store for supplies.
THE GREAT BELIEVERS a novel by Rebecca Makkai is the story
of AIDS in Chicago. It is more about
loss and grief and joy all mixed together.
I get stuck in the sadness of life. The book was compelling and I stayed
up late to continue reading.
