I started crying as I read the chapter in SLOW MEDICINE on
the beginnings of the AIDS epidemic as seen in an emergency room in San
Francisco. I remembered those days, how
helpless we all were as young men kept getting sick and dying. These days are
over but the memories are intense and ready to bring tears. Sigh, such hard times.
Another compelling review in the NYT of a book I wish I
could write. THE WORD PRETTY by
Elizabeth Gabbert. Quickly I go to
Amazon and order the book, no time to waste even though it will not come until
mid-January. It will be for me not a gift
for anyone else. I have to remind myself
that I deserve gifts also. I have a
stack of books ready to wrap for family members, books I love and am reluctant
to give away.
