Lying in bed in the dark I heard the sounds of airplanes flying slowly over my house and the murmur of crowds of people on the street. It took awhile for the sounds to reveal themselves as wind blasts and trees thrashing. I did not hear any sirens. We did not lose our electricity.
The East coast family leave this morning. I am staying in my room as they pack up. I feel a combination of emotions, sad, happy and confused. I will miss them and I am glad to get my house back.
I am reading HORSE by Geraldine Brooks and liking it. A stack of other library books sit patiently in the living room waiting for me.
I found the emergency lights, replaced batteries, charged batteries and put them on the living room table ready to be used by the family. We didn’t need them last night.
I am in week 4 of recovery now. Now is the hard part of making medical appointments through a complicated and unresponsive phone system. I call, listen to messages and directions, talk to a woman who doesn’t know anything and who promises to give the message to the scheduler, who will definitely get back to me. I wait, carrying my cell phone with me so I don’t miss the call. No call back yet.
