The rain has stopped, Canadian geese and mud hens are picking at the grass. I park a block away and hope I am inconspicuous.  Across the lake up the hill by the cemetery there is a homeless camp.  I see shadows moving through the trees.  Once it is dark they will set up their tents.

I bring a current New Yorker.  People are walking with their dogs around the lake.  The women without shelter walk slowly pushing a shopping card or a walker.  They are bundled up and their stuff is in plastic bags.  Over the hour 8 of them come to the bus.  Their packages and carts are stored and they check in with the woman holding the clip board.  Several stay outside to have one last cigarette.  Two women put their trash in the garbage can at the lake.  No one leaves a mess. The geese come close looking for a handout.

After the bus leaves I drive home in the dark.  My warm house is waiting for me.   I use my clean private bathroom. I eat popcorn and watch a movie.

I am still reading SEVERANCE by Ling Ma.
