Cat trails cross the new wet grasses in the backyard meandering
from the gapes in the fence. No dogs here. The neighborhood cats stretch and nap in the
soft grasses. The sprawling quince tree
is bare and this dark wet morning I can see into the lite windows of the
neighbor’s house. Cats, please catch the rat who is stealing my candy.
Several half- read books are on the table by my reading
chair. I don’t want to let them go but
still I don’t pick them up. Today I am
going to continue reading TO THE RIVER by Olivia Laing, a nonfiction nature
book.
