By the Coast Guard Pier Sunday morning. Crowds of young skinny sea lions lounge on rocks in the low tide. Some drift in the water with one fin up to catch the wind.

Tourists stop and look, so wonderful, they don't see the seals as starving, too skinny, they are responding to their cuteness, their visibility.

coughing, spitting, choking, barking, they fill the air with their speech. Their odor also whiffs up to meet the people walking on the recreation trail.

Sudden population growth and not enough food. Happens every so often.
