Tuesday, February 25, 2014

I have been wanting to read Middlemarch by George Eliot for a long time.  So I took it out of the library and started reading it today.  The print is small and difficult to follow.  I hadn't realized how much the design and font of the book affected my ability to read it.  Maybe I will go to a used books store to see if I can fond one that is friendlier to my eyes.

Went to see the movie WALKING THE CAMINO at the Osio.  It was beautiful and for that reason it wasn't so believable.  I like to see some mess or chaos, not just beautiful.

I am slowly rading the book MINDFULNESS,
A practical guide to awakening by Joseph Goldstein.  I read a little most mornings hoping to learn something when my mind is fresh.

One of my favorite writers is Diane Johnson.  I have read most of her books.  I saw at the library that she has a new book out called FLYOVER LIVES, a memoir. I brought it home with a  stack of other books.  Yesterday I finished it.  It was easy reading and very enjoyable.  I like to see how people really live and this book does that.

Sometime I am too tired to read, my eyes burn and yet it is too early to go to bed.  Too bad I think,  I can read some more tomorrow.

One of my favorite magazines is POETS AND WRITERS.  It arrives every other month. As I go through the magazine I start making a list of more books to read.  So many sound interesting.  I check the Library to see if they are carry these books.  Usually they don't because these books are small books that have not yet been discovered.  I am a an of small interesting books.

I have purchased at least a dozen YA and chapter books this last year, recommended by people who know.  the goal was to give them to the 12 and 14 year old kids that come to my house regularly.  But it seems  that my recommendation of a book is poisen. So now I have them scattered on tables around the house hoping they will find them on their own.  That doesn't work either.

I have working on reading ORFEO by Richard Powers, a marvelous writer. But this book is hard. My eyes have to slow down and read each word and think about the meaning. I am not sure I understand most of it. Tomorrow I will read some more. It is good to slow down sometimes.
I am going through the stack of partially read books and finishing them. Last night I finished NEVER GO BACK by Lee Child and now I am working on ORFEO by Richard Powers.  Then there is about 10 more to go.  Early spring cleaning of my books.

have a stack of half read books in my room. Books I started with great enthusiasm and then became seduced by a new flashy title. It is endless.

The current seduction is MY VENICE, essays by Donna Leon.

Are you the Butler the woman shouted to me through the car window.  No, I am the grandmother I shouted back.  She stopped.  Are you picking up the Butler kids?  No the Whildens.  Ok.  I am definitely not the butler or the maid or the cook.

Spent part of the evening watching the Olympics this evening.  the version that is On Demand.  So inspiring.  I became exhausted just watching the cross county skiers go up the hills.  I am too old to even fantasize about doing this. But I will sleep well after seeing all these young people work so hard.

I woke up in the middle of the night with a tummy ache. Too much fudge, I think

Tuesday, February 11, 2014

I have finally found the best fudge in town.  I asked all my friends and then I went and interviewed the winner.  Yes she makes the fudge personally in her little shop by Cannery Row.  I now have a fudge dealer that I can trust.

Overcast dreary day so what do I do.  I order books from amazon.  it's not that I don't have any good books to read, it's something else.  Ordering books is my comfort food.  Finding shelf room is always a hassle.

Sunday, February 9, 2014

Just watched the Olympic's opening program form Sochi. I was moved by the pageantry of it all and several times got tears in my eyes.

It is hard to believe that Russia is not the enemy, certainly in most of my life we were fighting the Russians.  It was moving to see all the independent nations come out to compete in the games, nations that once had been a part of the Soviet Union, the evil empire.

It is so hard to shake out my old perceptions.  The show was spectacular.  I got to see it on demand with no commercials.

There were five deer standing across the street looking at me while I parked my car at dusk.  I stopped and sat still to see what they were going to do.  Light rain was falling.  They stood still watching me.  they won, I moved first and got out of my car.  They are so good at standing still.

The blimp for the AT&T golf tournament has been flying aroung our area.  And it is raining.  I wonder how the golfers are actully doing in this rain.  no one cn complain since we have been so desperate for rain.  Really you cn't complain.

Wednesday, February 5, 2014

Went to my favorite little grocery store in Pacific Grove to get some food. I was hungry and it was noon.  I bought a lot of ready to eat food and ran hme.  Too much food for me to eat at one time.  But I am set up for the next couple of days.

Tuesday, February 4, 2014

It was cold and overcast today as we sat outside in our writing group.  Almost too cold to write.  But we continued writing and reading to each other.  Several homeless people were sleeping in the bushes.  Maybe they were listening.

Monday, February 3, 2014

Myfriends and I are looking for good current funny movies to watch.  The two that I really liked are THE HEAT and IDENTITY THIEF.  I couldn't stop laughing even though I knew they were deeply silly.

Another book to talk about. This month's interview in the Sun Magazine is with Po Ballantine. I have loved his essays in the Sun over the years. Hs lastest book is LOVE AND TERROR ON THE HOWLING PLAINS OF NOWHERE. I wanted to buy the book immediately. But something was tickling my brain. Looking at my book shelf I found the book. I had bought it last year but had not read it. I started it last night and I was right, quite good and interesting.

Saturday, February 1, 2014

I have been thinking about fudge for weeks now.  I drove to the candy store and bought two kinds.  In the afternoon I had a bite of the first. Not so good, yuk.  but the second type was fabulous.  Now I am not thinking of fudge anymore.
