I have been wanting to read Middlemarch by George Eliot for a long time. So I took it out of the library and started reading it today. The print is small and difficult to follow. I hadn't realized how much the design and font of the book affected my ability to read it. Maybe I will go to a used books store to see if I can fond one that is friendlier to my eyes.

One of my favorite writers is Diane Johnson. I have read most of her books. I saw at the library that she has a new book out called FLYOVER LIVES, a memoir. I brought it home with a stack of other books. Yesterday I finished it. It was easy reading and very enjoyable. I like to see how people really live and this book does that.

One of my favorite magazines is POETS AND WRITERS. It arrives every other month. As I go through the magazine I start making a list of more books to read. So many sound interesting. I check the Library to see if they are carry these books. Usually they don't because these books are small books that have not yet been discovered. I am a an of small interesting books.

I have purchased at least a dozen YA and chapter books this last year, recommended by people who know. the goal was to give them to the 12 and 14 year old kids that come to my house regularly. But it seems that my recommendation of a book is poisen. So now I have them scattered on tables around the house hoping they will find them on their own. That doesn't work either.

Spent part of the evening watching the Olympics this evening. the version that is On Demand. So inspiring. I became exhausted just watching the cross county skiers go up the hills. I am too old to even fantasize about doing this. But I will sleep well after seeing all these young people work so hard.

Just watched the Olympic's opening program form Sochi. I was moved by the pageantry of it all and several times got tears in my eyes.
It is hard to
believe that Russia is not the enemy, certainly in most of my life we were
fighting the Russians. It was moving to see all the independent nations come
out to compete in the games, nations that once had been a part of the Soviet
Union, the evil empire.
It is so hard to shake out my old perceptions. The
show was spectacular. I got to see it on demand with no commercials.

Another
book to talk about. This month's interview in the Sun Magazine is with Po
Ballantine. I have loved his essays in the Sun over the years. Hs
lastest book is LOVE AND TERROR ON THE HOWLING PLAINS OF NOWHERE. I
wanted to buy the book immediately. But something was tickling my
brain. Looking at my book shelf I found the book. I had bought it last
year but had not read it. I started it last night and I was right,
quite good and interesting.
