The wind is gusting through the trees. The fog is hovering close, not quite ready to descend down the hill. I watch the altar candle flame dance around as the wind comes in through the open windows.

Quiet day as I do my daily tasks.

Am going to bed early again tonight.

My sun flowers in the front yard are blooming.

I'm eating the garden lettuce and sugar peas. The nasturtiums are out running the deer bites, just barely.
the little pips are jumping from tree limb to tree limb.

I have finally gone through my week's supply of mail.

Now I have to pay bills.

I am glad to be alive.

Flying into LA I saw many golf courses. I wonder which one my brother played on. The vibrant green of the links were in contrast to the dry hills and desert. Flying so high I couldn't actually see golfers or cars, just the green grass and the blue of swimming pools in back yards.

I am glad to be home.

OK. I am out of here. I'm flying to New York for week to visit family. When I come back I will start post again. Thanks for stopping by.

In the late afternoon I am sitting outside by the garden. Great gusts of wind come up from the drifting fog. Crows are calling out their dislike of our streets water breaks have been fixed.

The giant sunflower is breaking into bloom.

All is well again.

The seven year old girl and I were eating a snack in the front yard and watching the bees in the nasturtiums.

she answered the phone and I could here her say, oh she is busy watching bees right now.

Neither of us are afraid of the bees and watch them go from flower to flower.

Came home from my afternoon walk and there were two at&t trucks at my telephone pole. One man was in the basket at the top of the pole. I asked the man on the street if he could tighten the low lying telephone line coming to my house. He said I would have to call 611. I said that I have many times but I can't get through to a human since my phone seems to be working. He said I have to keep pushing the buttons.

I felt so hopeless, Look this line is dangerous to the little boys in the neighborhood. He looked at the drooping line and then yelled up to the guy in the basket. Hey, tighten the telephone line and he pulled something and the line was tightened. ten seconds max.

I wanted to kiss him.

I drove to Santa Cruz this morning to a meeting that I suspected would be difficult. Couldn't decide what to listen, my anxious thoughts, a radio report on rioting in Tehran, Leonard Cohen songs on a cd. The cd won and I sang along.

I didn't sing on the way home, just kept my mind on driving feeling a bit hopeless. I could hardly see the blue sea sparkling in the gorgeous sun.

I'm reading I LOVE A MAN IN UNIFORM by Lily Burana. A memoir of her life as a army officer's wife. It is more interesting then it sounds.

I'm going to be 69 this week. What does aging mean?

I am in the middle of young old age (65-75) Middle old age is 75-85 and old old age is 85-95. It's like reverse growing,

I am slowly unlearning what I so carefully learned in the first 60 years of my life.

Driving back from Santa Cruz I became mesmerized by the front wheel of a bicycle tied to the back of a car.

The wheel kept going around and around as if it was traveling some place rather then hitching a ride on a car.

I ate a salad for lunch with lettuce from my garden.

I am in the middle of reading one of my favorite authors, Goeff Dyer. This is his novel Jeff in Venice, Death in Varanasi.

Scott finished painting the zendo white and now it is perfect. All the other rooms look a bit shabby.

Went to get my hair cut at super cuts. Not many people there. The hair cutter said business was real slow and her hours were cut back. Everything is a struggle.

She asked me how long since the last hair cut. I said three months. You should get it cut every four to six weeks. We need the business and you need the cut.

I said I would think about it.

Driving to Community Hospital this morning I saw an old man selling bouquets of flowers to people driving cars. No one stopped. People are getting desperate to earn money to live.

I'm still a little sore today.

Took a long walk along the waterfront early this morning, foggy but not cold. I miss seeing the schools of fish in the bay. It's been several years since they have been around.

Huge cruise ship in the harbor.

Shopping at
whole Foods I tripped on the wheel of the cart and went down with a bang on the cement floor. It took me a few minutes to see that I was not hurt.

People kept saying are you hurt, are you hurt. At first I did not know. I am sore and bruised and fine. Nothing broken.

I guess the weekly gallon of milk and the extra padding on my body helped. It's scary to get old.

I really meant to write yesterday. When Ii returned home from Santa Cruz I was so tired I went to bed. In the day light. and slept all night. I was tired. I am up this morning and feel fine. Sleep is wonderful.

the rain did not come in spite of the forecast. While watering the newly planted fruit trees a young blue jay jumped into the spray, drinking from the puddles.

Finally on a oak tree branch he shook out his wet feathers.

In the background was the sounds of the graduation crowd as the new high school graduates went through their ceremonies.

Maybe the graduates would like to run through the sprinklers at my house.

the flowering horse chestnut trees were every where on the Carmel Valley road this morning. Long sprays of white blossoms filled the trees.

And then when I returned to the ocean there was a calm that created a blue gray mirror surface on the water.

Now the afternoon the wind has picked up shattering the ocean's mirror.

My tomato plants don't look so good. Even when I water them. there are yellow flowers but the leaves have lots of black spots. The lettuce is great. We just look at them grow and wonder when is the time to harvest and eat them.

Balmy day, I had to water the whole garden as the plants began to curl up and demand water.

During my two hours at the hospital this morning, walking through the long halls connecting the different places I suddenly saw how to get from one place to another without having to return to the office.

My mental mind map layed down some new lines and finally I could see how the hospital walk ways were actually connected.

They have been moving walls and changing the place for so long but now it is beginning to make sense.

Spent time as a chaplain this morning talking to patients. There seemed to be more empty beds then usual. More empty stores, fewer cars and the same old fog. I wonder when the economy is going to change again.
